Between August and September 2026, two companies launched the same category of product: an AI agent with a cloud computer that keeps working after you close the client. xAI, now renamed SpaceXSI, put Grok Bot into beta on August 11. Meta launched Muse in the United States on September 8, then brought it to Canada, Japan, and Singapore.

The surface capabilities overlap heavily. Both open a browser, sign into your accounts, fill forms, place orders, and run on a schedule. The differences sit in three places: what unit the cloud computer isolates, how agents collaborate, and how quotas are counted. Those three decide who takes over your household bills and who takes over repetitive team work.

How Muse is built

The core of Muse is Muse Secure VM. Each user gets a dedicated virtual machine holding the agent itself, its browser, and the credentials for any service you connect. Another user’s agent cannot reach it.

A separate agent called Sentinel runs on the same machine, kept apart from Muse at the system level. Nothing Muse does reaches the internet unless Sentinel approves it, and Sentinel asks you for permission when needed. Credentials go into secure storage, so Muse can use them without reading them, and Muse cannot see passwords you type into the browser yourself.

Muse checks with you before sensitive actions, including sending email and making purchases. A full audit trail records what it has done and what it plans to do. Payments run through a single-use virtual card generated by Stripe Link, so your real card number never enters the agent’s view. Meta says Muse is the first agent covered by Link’s purchase protections, which cover damaged or lost items, price drops, and fee-free returns.

The published capability examples centre on daily errands: connecting Gmail, Google Calendar, and Instagram for context, turning a saved Instagram recipe into a grocery list, planning a dinner menu while remembering friends’ dietary restrictions, comparing prices and ordering from a retailer, and breaking a long-term goal into a plan it keeps advancing. The Singapore version connects Shopee, Grab, Singapore Airlines, Agoda, ShopBack, Klook, Trip.com, and Lazada, covering price comparison, orders, ticketing, and cashback.

On September 29 Meta also released Muse for Small Business, connecting the agent to Asana, Zoom, Intuit, Box, Canva, and Slack.

How Grok Bot is built

The product unit for Grok Bot is the Bot. You create a named Bot, give it a role such as sales outbound, recruiting screen, expense management, or bug reproduction, and hand over work the way you message a colleague.

All Bots share one persistent cloud computer under your account, equipped with a browser, file system, and terminal. Each Bot occupies one screen on that machine, and a Bot runs one computer-use task at a time. The official FAQ states that isolation is per user, not per Bot, so files, browser sessions, and logins placed on that machine are visible to every Bot you run.

Multi-Bot coordination is what separates it from single-agent products. Bots message each other, share context in threads, and can be placed in a group chat where they assign ownership and hand off work, pulling you in only for judgment calls.

The other mechanism is routines. You let a Bot watch you complete a workflow once, it records the steps and saves them as a routine, and it runs the routine on its own next time. Combined with schedule and event triggers, that work continues after you close your laptop.

Connectors cover Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, OneDrive, Outlook mail and calendar, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and Salesforce, with MCP support. Local MCP servers need public reachability or a tunnel, a real constraint for internal tools behind a firewall. For older systems without an API, the Bot works through the browser using computer vision.

For safety, Auto Review rules offer two modes, require approval and conditional automatic approval, alongside the allow once, deny, and always allow granularity. Sensitive steps can hand control back to you. The cloud computer is encrypted in transit and at rest, training opt-out is available, and enterprise admins can set DLP, certificates, proxies, and network controls.

Quota structure

Muse has three tiers. The free tier covers what Meta describes as most daily needs, with a weekly usage cap. Power costs $20 a month for 500M Muse tokens per week. Maximum costs $100 a month for 3B tokens per week. All three tiers have identical features and differ only in allowance. A payment card is required at sign-up because usage can move onto a paid plan.

Grok Bot has no standalone subscription. It ships with The X Subscription at $30 a month for Premium, $100 for Super, and $200 for Ultra. Plus at $8 and Free do not include it. Legacy Cursor Pro, Pro+, Ultra, and Cursor Teams still include Grok Bot, and linking a SuperGrok or X Premium+ account grants usage as well.

One change after October is worth noting. At launch in August, the official post said Grok Bot had its own usage separate from Grok and Cursor plans. After the move into The X Subscription, the rule became shared: Grok Bot, Cursor, and the Grok apps draw from one weekly pool that refreshes each week, with prepaid credit and auto top-up covering overages. Buying a Cursor plan and linking SuperGrok does not add together; the system uses whichever grants more weekly usage.

At entry level, Muse starts at $20 with a free tier, while Grok Bot starts at $30 with no free tier. The capability bought by that gap is not equivalent, since Grok Bot’s $30 also covers Cursor coding and the Grok apps.

Availability

Muse is limited to four markets. The US has had it on iOS, Android, and muse.ai since September 8. Meta confirmed Canada on September 29. Japan launched October 23, and Singapore followed in late October. Meta’s help centre states that subscriptions vary by region and account, so third-party guides claiming a longer country list may not match what your own account shows, and a VPN does not change eligibility. No date has been announced for the UK or the EU. On clients, the native Mac app arrived September 18 and can act inside Mail, Calendar, Notes, Messages, and Files with permission. WhatsApp supports direct conversation. Microsoft announced a native Windows app on October 7 with no release date, and support for Meta glasses is in preparation.

Grok Bot publishes no equivalent country list. Installers exist for all three desktop platforms, and mobile covers iOS and Android. Mobile can view and direct work, while updating, recovering, or resetting the cloud computer requires the desktop app.

Known issues

Muse’s problems cluster around permission boundaries. One user reported that when he asked Muse to sell equipment on Facebook Marketplace, the agent shared his home address with a buyer without confirmation, accepted a $600 offer, and corresponded on its own, after which the buyer showed up at his building. He said he had checked an always-allow box but expected a checkpoint before the sale closed. Other reports describe early adopters deleting Muse or tightening its permissions after reading that it had accessed another user’s text messages. Meta’s response is that the Messages integration in the Mac app is opt-in and requires multiple permissions.

On data use, Muse by default can use eligible interactions to train Meta models, which can be turned off in settings. Meta commits that Muse does not share conversations or VM data with its ads systems, and users can ask it to forget specific things. A planned Muse Confidential VM would encrypt the whole virtual machine, including conversations, with a key only the user holds, so even Meta cannot read it, but that has not shipped.

Grok Bot’s problems cluster around opacity and lock-in. It retains memory, files, and preferences, but the official documentation describes no way to inspect, correct, export, or delete individual memories. It runs only on an xAI-managed cloud computer, offers no self-hosting, and cannot switch to Claude, GPT, or a local model. It has no email, Slack, Telegram, or phone entry point, so all interaction happens inside its own clients. The documentation also notes that some websites block automation or require a human to step in.

A framework for choosing

Three questions, asked in order, usually settle it.

First, are you taking over household accounts or work processes. Household accounts involve payment credentials, home address, medical and travel information, where isolation boundaries and payment paths matter more than model capability. Muse offers one VM per person, unreadable credentials, a virtual single-use card, and an inspectable audit trail on that line. Work processes span multiple systems, multiple roles, and long-running routines, which suits Grok Bot’s multi-Bot handoff and routine recording.

Second, do you care more about coordination between agents or the boundary between agent and you. Grok Bot puts several Bots on one machine sharing files and logins, trading isolation for lower handoff cost and less context loss, at the price of any Bot’s behaviour exposing everything on that machine. Muse is a single-agent route with the individual as the isolation unit, at the price of no parallel roles.

Third, which side already sits in your subscriptions. If you already pay for Cursor or Grok, Grok Bot is an increment on an existing plan. If you want to start free, direct work through WhatsApp, and value per-machine isolation, Muse has the lower bar. The two do not share memory or credentials, so separating household and work accounts is a workable arrangement.

One factor unrelated to capability also matters: both products are iterating quickly, and pricing and availability both changed between August and October, so any comparison table has a shelf life. Check the allowance and connector list your own account shows before deciding.
